Diane Mae Robinson’s epic fantasy and adventure tale for children, Sir Princess Petra’s Mission, is the third book in this original and highly acclaimed series about a princess who’d really rather be a knight. Sir Princess Petra is a brilliant role model for both girls and boys who may feel somewhat out of the mainstream with their goals, attitudes and ambitions, and she fulfills that function marvelously. Robinson’s series is also a perfect introduction to epic fantasy for children that is never patronizing and always filled with the imagination, action and adventure that make epic fantasy work so well. Sir Princess Petra’s Mission: The Pen Pieyu Adventures, Book 3 is most highly recommended.

5 / 5 Grady Harp, Top 100 Amazon Reviewer A story with a character that obviously has a future. The degree of imagination is matched by the terrific humor and sense of fun as always in Diane’s books. Grammar Lesson – Between vs. Among

Excerpt from The Dragon Grammar Book by Diane Mae Robinson, coming soon to a kingdom near you.

Finally! An easy-to-understand grammar book with a sense of humor. From multi-award winning children’s fantasy author, Diane Mae Robinson, The Dragon Grammar Book, featuring the characters of The Pen Pieyu Adventures series, introduces beginners to the basic rules of the English language.  For middle grades to adults, The Dragon Grammar Book is an entertaining adventure into the mysterious Land of Grammar.

Between vs. Among

Between and among are often confused because their difference in meaning is subtle. Both words are prepositions.

Between is usually used with two separate and distinct things.

The grammar book is hidden between the oven and the ice box.

Between can also be used with three or more things as long as they are separate and distinct.

The differences between dragons, horses, and unicorns are all listed in the royal rule book.

A common misconception is that between is used with two things andamong is used with three or more things. When using a comparison for separate and distinct things, use between.

Among is used when talking about individuals or things that aren’t distinct. It is usually used to portray a group of people or things. Among is usually followed by a plural noun.

If you live among dragons, you should wear fire-proof apparel.

The king seeks approval among those who agree with him.

Among and amongst both mean amidst, surrounded by, or in the company of. Amongst is uncommon and is only really used in literary prose seeking to add a sense of the old fashioned.

Excerpt

Subject/Object of a sentence

Subject is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something. To find the subject of a sentence, ask “who” or “what” the verb is talking about.                                                   The dragon studies grammar.

“The dragon” is the subject, grammar is the object, and studies is the verb.

Sometimes, a subject can be more than one word and even be an entire clause.                               The rules about onion fighting could fill pages in the royal rule book.

To find the subject in the above sentence, ask “what” could fill pages in the royal rule book. The subject is therefore “The rules about onion fighting.”

The subject of a verb is not part of a prepositional phrase (phrases that start with words such as at, in, on, among, along, within).                                                                                            Prince Mesoggie, along with his puny army, have hung their wet clothes on the drawbridge.

In this sentence, both Prince Mesoggie and his puny army have hung out their clothes, but because “along with his puny army” is a prepositional phrase, the subject is “Prince Mesoggie.”

Usually, but not always, the subject comes before the verb in a sentence.                                         Within the castle moat are several snapping crocodiles.

In this sentence, are is the linking verb following moat but moat is not the subject because “Within the castle moat” is a prepositional phrase. The subject crocodiles follows the verb.

Object is the person or thing that is affected by the action of the verb. There are three different kinds of objects.

Direct object is a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun that receives the action of the verb in a clause or sentence.                                                                                                               The dragon studies grammar.

Grammar is the noun and direct object that follows the verb studies and completes the sentence of what the subject “the dragon” is doing.

Indirect object is a noun or pronoun that indicates to whom or for whom the action of a verb in a sentence is performed. When a verb is followed by two objects, the indirect object usually comes right after the verb and always before the direct object.                      The dragon gave her a book.

Her is the indirect object. The pronoun her comes after the verb gave and before the noun and direct object book and completes the sentence of what the subject “the dragon” did.

Object of a preposition is a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun that follows a preposition and completes the meaning of the sentence.                                                                 The princess clobbered him with the book.

Book is the noun and the object of the preposition with and completes the sentence of what the subject “the princess” did.                                                                                                    The dragon now reads in a cave.

Cave is the noun and the object of the preposition in and completes the sentence of what the subject “the dragon” does now.

“The king writes up more silly rules in the royal rule book to deter Sir Princess Petra from her knightly ways and useless talent, and turn her into a real princess once and for all.

“Will the king finally succeed with this newly written, ridiculous mission for Petra?” [back cover]

Review
Sir Princess Petra and friends return for the third and final of four installments of The Pen Pieyu Adventures. King Longstride continues add new, oddly worded rules to the “Royal Rule Book” trying to strip Sir Princess Petra of her knighthood. The King is so determined to keep Petra a princess he willing sends Petra to the Land of the Boogy Gobees, alone. Wait, did he say alone? ALONE! No Snarls? No Sir Bograt? No one by Petra’s side?

Then King decreed, (should Petra actually fail her mission),

Book3-Nov.15 (1) (1)_page105_image10“Hence if the hereby-stated should fail this royal seal-of-approval mission, which is of the utmost importance to the well-being of the kingdom shareholders—meaning me and the queen—the hereby-said Princess Knight will henceforth be required to relinquishment of the hereby-noted knighthood to the full completeness so as to render it null and never was.”

Could this get worse? Yep, if Petra has only 2 days to complete the mission and, should she “fail, forfeit, or give up” Sir Bograt, the bog witch, will lose her knighthood as well. Petra’s solo mission is to capture a “car-panther”—vicious scoundrels with saw-blade teeth reinforced with iron tips—and bring it back to Pen Pieyu Kingdom. (What will King Longstride do with such a dangerous animal?) Petra calls the King’s bluff and sets off on her mission. She travels deep into the forest, through the swamps surrounding Kingdom Mesoggie, and finally arrives at the Land of the Boogy Gobees.

Book3-Nov.15 (1) (1)_page105_image18As Petra enters the Land of the Boogy Gobees, her steed suddenly disappears. (Did I forget to mention how Petra—once again—outsmarts her father? Well, she did. Snarls and Sir Bograt are by Petra’s side. Wait, you should know, Bograt was lost at Hobble-Wobble Creek, swept away on a rogue wave and disappearing down the creek). Now alone, as her father wished, Petra must complete the mission.

Book3-Nov.15 (1) (1)_page105_image12Sir Princess Petra’s Mission may be the best installment of The Pen Pieyu Adventures. Robinson increased the number of unexpected twists, making them stranger and funnier. As is the norm in Kingdom Pen Pieyu, you will meet several characters, each one delightfully stranger than the last. Snarls, the dragon, has always been my favorite character. (Snarls, my friend, after three stories, you are looking perfectly plump.)

I love the word play, common in this series, and the goofy King and Queen. Petra is a great role model and a non-stereotypical character for girls. She wants her parents to accept her, as she is—a princess and a knight. Petra is respectful and considerate, has great self-esteem, and understands the King’s Royal Rule Book better than the King. Though The Pen Pieyu Adventures is a terrific series for girls, boys will find much to love as well, including characters such as Snarls the dragon (Petra’s Steed).

Book3-Nov.15 (1) (1)_page105_image7Sir Princess Petra’s Mission will keep reluctant readers entertained with its short chapters, broken up with interesting grayscale illustrations. At 105 pages, this is a fast read, though reluctant readers could easily finish one or two chapters a sitting, if not more. Bermundo’s illustrations enhance the story and bring the characters to life. Sir Princess Petra’s Mission is his debut children’s book. Michael Bermundo is also a student at, and will soon graduate from, University of Cebu with a degree in animation.

cover group seriesIf you are looking for a chapter book with non-stereotypical characters, intelligent word play, and kid-friendly humor The Pen Pieyu Adventures is the series you want. Dragon Books For Children And Some Dragon Facts

Dragon Books

For the most part, the dragon seems to be portrayed as the evil villain. And according to folklore, they were. Green Dragons in Folklore http://www.draconika.com/types.php

Green Dragon

The green dragon is a belligerent creature and master of intrigue, politics, and backbiting. He is cruel. He prefers forests—the older and bigger the trees, the better. Instead of being overtly aggressive, he prefers to concoct elaborate schemes to gain power or wealth with as little effort as possible. He may make his lair behind a waterfall or near a lake, pond, or stream that provides a submerged entrance. The closer one gets to his lair, the darker the woods become. Evil hangs in the air, mingling with the forest scents to produce foul odors.http://www.draconika.com/types.php

The only similarity I see in Snarls as compared to the green dragon of folklore is that Snarls does live in the forest–The Forest of Doom–and he is green. The Forest of Doom does sound scary, but the forest is named The Forest of Doom because it belongs to the Doom Family. Snarls’s full name is, Snarls Lotsapuff Doom.

My Writing Process

As a children’s chapter book author, the first and most important aspect of my writing process involves finding my “child voice”. “Child Voice” is a term in children’s literature that interprets into the author being able to get inside the heads of their children characters; think and act as those children characters would think and act and, thus, be able to write about them with ease.

Through all my years of studying children’s literature and children’s behavior, a major lesson I have learned is that to write for children the writer must have a certain level of immaturity along with the ability to remember the art of play. In my case, this is very doable, and when my friends call me immature, I take that as a compliment that I am on the right creative track.

When I am in the first stages of planning a new children’s book, I do a lot of note keeping, character building, and mapping out the fantasy world that the characters will be having their adventures in. Once I know my character’s world and know each character as much as I would know a good friend, then the plot creating process begins.

The creating of their story starts out as a movie playing in my head. This movie plays a scene, re-winds, re-plays the scene somewhat differently, builds the next scene only to re-wind, re-build, and re-plays that scene. As day and months go by, the movie keeps building, re-playing, strengthening the plot; it’s just about like the characters take over the making of the movie to get their story told.

Then one day, the movie in my head is complete and that’s when I get down to the business of writing. When I’m in the writing phase, I write with a frenzied passion for days, weeks on end, often writing non-stop for 12 hours at a time until the book is written.

Once the story is written in the first draft, I leave it alone for a few weeks to give the characters some time to settle into the story.

Then it’s on to editing. Editing phase will last another several weeks where I edit in two or three hour intervals every few days.

When I feel the book is at least 90% well written and well edited, the manuscript is submitted to my publisher. I am published with a traditional publisher, so the book will be scrutinized by their editor and the editor and I will work through several more stages of editing before the book goes on to production

I remember my first adventure through the pages with Petra, oh excuse me…SIR Princess Petra. ^-^  It was magical, mystical, illustrated and wordy fun with every turn of the page AND phrase.  I actually started with book two as part of a blog tour and enjoyed it so much that I then sought out book one to enjoy on my own (which apparently I forgot to review once upon a time…oops!).  When I saw the review request in my INBOX for book three, I immediately responded with an enthusiastic YES as I knew it was not to be missed.  I mentally walked down memory lane and then looked back at ye olde blog to read through the first post only to realize, it was THREE years ago that the adventure had taken place.  Wow.  THREE years.  It seems like a lifetime considering the books we devour on a weekly/monthly/yearly basis, but the good ones stick with you, you know…and this was definitely one of the good ones.

Now, being that this is a series, one might wonder if you have to read the preceding books to be “in the know”.  In this case, totally unnecessary (but still recommended for the sheer enjoyment of it all!) because the author has taken care of you with a brief overview of both preceding adventures at the beginning of this installment.  Bookmarks up to the author for that nifty inclusion!  After removing the cobwebs from the past, I dove in feet first (as all good divers should) and discovered Sir Princess Petra and friends waiting for me within the pages as if I had never left, eagerly anticipating their next adventure.  Thanks to the King that wait will be short lived and if he has anything to say about it, so will Sir Princess Petra’s stint as a knight…a very un-princess-like pastime in his opinion.  With her mission in mind, she and her somewhat merry band of friends set forth seeking to capture the illusive car-panther…but what they find is beyond their wildest dreams.
It was great to see the familiar faces of Petra, Bograt, Snarls, and both of the royal Longstride’s again, though the latter is still confoundedly set in making Petra into the princess they want her to be instead of embracing her uniqueness to its full potential.  *grr*  I love how Petra is not afraid to be who she really is and calls her parents out on their shenanigans time and again.  That’s right King Longstride.  Just because you make a rule doesn’t mean it will stick if not grammatically sound.  He he he.  For any of you that have been visiting here for some time, you know that I love word play and am a stickler for word usage/sentence structure so the wordy fun encountered here is right up my alley making Petra an instant literary bestie.  Next up, Snarls!  Yes, that lovable dragon with a heart of gold is back and though he may not be able to spit fire on command but he’s working on it; in the mean time, he’s utilizing his other many talents.  Bograt is…well, Bograt.  Here and there, onion chomping and wave surfing, not much gets her down and the secrets she keeps are too many to number; good thing she’s on our side, right?

Sir Princess Petra
All in all, a wonderful adventure through the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu with a spunky group that I’d call friends any day of the week.  They each march to their own drummer, leaving an impression you won’t soon forget, but that’ part of their charm.  It reminds us that we can do anything we want to do, be anything we want to be…so long as we choose our words carefully.  ^-^  Recommended read for Children’s Fiction fans of all ages.
