About the Book:

When his father, the King, demands that the Prince be a “Royal Trumpet”, the unhappy boy brings doom and gloom to the kingdom until a mystical maiden guides him to finding his own unique music.

Barbara Roman’s ‘The Prince Who Was A Piccolo’ teaches children about self-esteem, asserting independence, attitudes, and being comfortable with their own identity. They will also learn about different musical instruments and the influence of music on our lives and emotions. There are mystical qualities in the story as it metaphorically touches on meditation, intuition, and spiritual guidance.

Beautifully illustrated by Vladimir Cebu, this book is a rich learning experience for children, as they learn about music instruments, and ways to express their emotions.

What I Thought:

The Prince Who Was a Piccolo is a wonderful story with the subtle underlying moral value for children to believe in themself and strive for their own talents in life, whatever those talents may be.  I fell in love with the prince and his brave attitude to not give up searching for his own musical talent, even though his musical talent may not please his father the king. The story is so well written that I believe this book will become a classic in children’s literature. The artwork is fantastic. This story is one of the most creative stories I’ve read in children’s literature in several years. Kudos to the author!

Hurly Burly The Squirrel Next Door (Squirrel Facts Edition)-Book Review

By S.S. Bazinet

Illustrated by Laura Christine Tiralla

Publisher: Renata Press (October 26, 2015)

Age Level: 4 – 8 | Grade Level: P – 3

About The Book

Hurly the squirrel is as cute as they come, but would he make a good house guest?
When Hurly invites himself into a boy’s home, the boy quickly learns that squirrels do not have pleasing inside-the-house manners.

“He chatters and scratches, he picks at the latches
of cupboards that hold all my food!
And if they resist, his teeth will persist,
and sly is his favorite mood.”

This hilarious and brightly illustrated tale of how a squirrel can create chaos will delight young and old readers alike.

What I Thought

This is an ingenious picture story book–it’s an adorable, fun story and a fact book all in one! The story of Hurly Burly the squirrel, written in charming rhyme, unfolds as he invites himself to become a house guest of a little boy. Hurly Burly is trouble, for sure, but he’s the most lovable squirrel ever. So what can the boy do to keep Hurly Burly around but cut down on the chaos in the house?

The squirrel facts (included on every page at the bottom of the story) are delightful and will educate children while they are entertained with the humorous story.

Illustrator Laura Christine Tiralla has captured the essence of Hurly Burly with wonderful artwork.

Little Miss History Travels to Mount Vernon

little-miss-history-mount-vernonLittle Miss History Travels to Mount Vernon

by Barbara Ann Mojica (Author), Victor Ramon Mojica (Illustrator)

Paperback: 46 pages

Publisher: eugenus® STUDIOS (September 21, 2016)

About the book

Who was George Washington? Washington is best known as America’s first president, but he was also a military hero. If you asked George Washington what he really wanted to be, he would reply, “a farmer.” Seeking to revolutionize antiquated 18th century farming methods, Washington experimented with crop rotation, fertilizers, plowing and plants. The Mount Vernon Ladies Association began restoring his estate to its former glory in 1853. Today the buildings, grounds and The Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center reveal the real Father of the United States of America.

What I thought

Little Miss History Travels to Mount Vernon is the 7th book in this excellent series that visits historical landmarks in the United States. In Barbara Ann Mojica’s latest book, Little Miss History takes the reader on an intriguing journey to Mount Vernon to learn about the life of George Washington. The author presents interesting facts about the lifestyle at the time by visiting rooms in George Washington’s mansion, the gardens and grounds, and the slave quarters. Each page has a photograph that has the wonderful illustrations overlaid on it.

This book, as well as all the book in this series, are written and designed in such a way that readers will be hooked on history. Wonderful book and highly recommended.

My Writing Process

As a children’s chapter book author, the first and most important aspect of my writing process involves finding my “child voice”.  “Child Voice” is a term in children’s literature that interprets into the author being able to get inside the heads of their children characters; think and act as those children characters would think and act and, thus, be able to write about them with ease.

Through all my years of studying children’s literature and children’s behavior, a major lesson I have learned is that to write for children the writer must have a certain level of immaturity along with the ability to remember the art of play.  In my case, this is very doable, and when my friends call me immature, I take that as a compliment that I am on the right creative track.

When I am in the first stages of planning a new children’s book, I do a lot of note keeping, character building, and mapping out the fantasy world that the characters will be having their adventures in. Once I know my character’s world and know each character as much as I would know a good friend, then the plot creating process begins.

The creating of their story starts out as a movie playing in my head. This movie plays a scene, re-winds, re-plays the scene somewhat differently, builds the next scene only to re-wind, re-build, and re-plays that scene. As day and months go by, the movie keeps building, re-playing, strengthening the plot; it’s just about like the characters take over the making of the movie to get their story told.

Then one day, the movie in my head is complete and that’s when I get down to the business of writing. When I’m in the writing phase, I write with a frenzied passion for days, weeks on end, often writing non-stop for 12 hours at a time until the book is written.

Once the story is written in the first draft, I leave it alone for a few weeks to give the characters some time to settle into the story.

Then it’s on to editing. Editing phase will last another several weeks where I edit in two or three hour intervals every few days.

When I feel the book is at least 90% well written and well edited, the manuscript is submitted to my publisher. I am published with a traditional publisher, so the book will be scrutinized by their editor and the editor and I will work through several more stages of editing before the book goes on to production.

Another 5 Star Review for Sir Princess Petra

5.0 out of 5 stars A PRINCESS WITH PIZAZZ!, January 5, 2014
As the story opens, we meet Princess Petra who is about to celebrate her birthday on the ninth day of the ninth month on the ninth year. According to royal custom, she may request anything she wishes as a birthday gift. Petra addresses her parents and informs them that she is tired of the usual gifts of jewelry and clothes. This year she wants to become a royal knight. Her father, King Longstride cannot find anything disallowing her request in the royal rulebook. However, she must choose and successfully accomplish one of three acts of royal bravery: capture a crocodile and make his skin into a royal leather chair, quiet the howling dragon named Snarls who lives in the Forest of Doom, or eat a roomful of raw onions! The princess dislikes onions and is friendly with the kingdom’s crocodile, so she quickly decides on quieting the dragon.Princess Petra departs the castle in a suit of armor made of pots and pans because all the royal armor is too big for her. Her weapon looks more like a cake knife than a sword. The poor princess soon meets adversity. During her adventures, she must figure out how to stop the dragon from howling and keeping the royal family awake, cope with a witch in the bog, and deal with an army of knights from a neighboring kingdom who want to challenge her. This princess has brains and common sense along with her beauty. She does not win her battles with force and bullying; Petra is a good judge of character and human nature! (even if some of those characters are not technically human) She has a wonderful sense of humor and can turn adversity into advantage.Petra provides an outstanding role model for young boys and girls for she has many lessons of courage, friendship and character to teach them. She and the other quirky characters in this book possess a delightful sense of humor. The black and white pencil drawings are soft and subtle complementing the quick moving text of this short chapter book which could be read in one sitting as a read aloud or in chapters for discussion in a classroom setting. Looking forward to reading more of The Pen Pieyu Adventures from this talented new author.

What does an author do when not authoring?

When I first started writing and creating stories, I thought that was a tremendous amount of work.

Then along came the part where a couple of my stories were ready to start looking for a publishing home. The process that follows in researching publishers and the children’s book markets to see who is accepting what and what is the process for submitting, became more work still.

After many years of researching those markets, writing query letters, submitting my manuscripts when requested, waiting for an answer, researching some more, submitting again, waiting some more, my first manuscript was accepted by a publisher—27 rejections later, in fact.

So, finally, a contract. Here comes the easy street of being an author, right?  Wrong.

Illustration by Samantha Kickingbird for Sir Princess Petra – The Pen Pieyu Adventures, book 1.

First, comes the editing of the book, which is quite a huge process to begin with. Then, I’m assigned a marketing manager who informs me about all the things I am required to do as an author. The marketing manager puts my book is distribution all around the world and is in charge of marketing, what would I possibly have to do?

Well, putting a book in distribution to book stores and on-line book sellers apparently isn’t enough. With the amount of new books being published by traditional publishers and self-published authors (approximately 40,000 books per month), a new author has to get their name out there.

So an author must learn marketing skill also. My marketing manager told me I would have to set up a blog, make regular posts, attend book signings he set up for me, talk about my book on Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc, schedule events to speak at schools and libraries,  attend interviews he set up, seek out reviews for my book, regularly update the website the publisher set up for me, and join other blogs about writing and hopefully in responding to these blogs, they will in turn respond to mine. All this to try and stir up interest in my book.

Now, these things are all a lot more work than I ever anticipated. I do everything my marketing manager suggests–sometimes with gritted teeth, but I do listen to him.

So just when I think my time is taken up to the max, I decided to hire a marketing-publicity person to  set up a more professional website with key word rich formatting. He also writes and sends out news releases with key word structure, maintains and updates my new website, and in general, is a computer savvy person that knows how to stir up a lot of interest and also how to get my new website into the top pages of Google hits. After all, people have to find me in the sea of writers.

All these things do work to get my book, and myself as a writer, noticed. But it is also a lot of work on my part to follow the instructions given to me by these book selling geniuses.

Every week, I also have fan mail to answer, and write new posts for two blog sites that I maintain.

So, what does an author do when not authoring? Well, about 20 hours per week dealing with the list above.

By the way, I have a full-time job at a dental office and a part-time job as an art teacher. My writing days are now limited to a few specific days I set aside during any given month.

And just when I thought the writing part was hard work.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Award Winning Author Diane Mae Robinson Receives Two Major Awards For Her Latest Children’s Book, ‘Sir Princess Petra’

Robinson received the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artists Award for Children’s Book Author and took 2nd Place in the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards

[December 4, 2012, St. Paul, Alberta, Canada] Award winning Canadian author Diane Robinson recently took home two major awards for her childrens book, ‘Sir Princess Petra’. She was honored with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artists Award for Children’s Book Author. She also took 2nd place in the Purple Dragonfly Book awards for Children’s Chapter Book. ‘Sir Princess Petra’, the first book in the Pen Pieyu adventures, features surprising plot twists and turns, brilliant flashes of humor, zany characters and is rooted in timeless values that shine through the charismatic main character. The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artists Award is open to artists from every discipline and every possible genre within it. The private ceremony was held at the Government House on June 14, 2012. His Honour Col. (Ret’d) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell bestowed the award on the recipients. The ceremony was attended by founding members Fil Fraser and the Honourable (Ret’d) Senator Tommy Banks. Tommy Banks reminded those in attendance that the aim of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards is to build Alberta’s artistic community as a whole.”Receiving the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award  for Literary Arts,” stated Ms. Robinson, “is a huge honor, and a definite boost for recognition in the literary world.”As regards the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards, Linda Radke, President of Five Star Publications recently stated, “Winning any place in the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards is a huge honor because in order to maintain the integrity of the contest, a minimum score is required before a 1st or 2nd Place or Honorable Mention will be awarded – even if it is the only entry in a category,. Competition is steep, too, because there is no publication date limit as long as the book is still in print.”

‘Sir Princess Petra’ is written in the tradition of C. S. Lewis and is reminiscent of ‘Shrek’. Reviewers have labeled the award winning book a ‘fantasy adventure that is sure to become a timeless classic.’

While dragon books are one of the most popular segments of fantasy fiction and children’s books in today’s marketplace, in this fantasy fiction work, Robinson uses the dragon books concept as the background to teaching young people traditional values. In the story line, Princess Petra’s unusual birthday request to become a royal knight sends the royal court into a frenzy. But when she agrees to undertake a knight’s quest, not even the royal rulebook, with its list of outrageous knight deeds, can dissuade her. Armed with a cake knife and a suit of the best royal pots and pans, Petra chooses to hush the howling dragon, Snarls, in the Forest of Doom and win her real armour. Ms. Robinson’s highly praised work demonstrates that dragon books can be something much more than dragon books.

“Writing is a labor of love and hard work,” continued Ms. Robinson, “and receiving these two major awards is confirmation that I am on the right path in my career of writing for children.”

Ms Robinson is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at robinsond@mscnet.ca. More information, including reviews, information for teachers and librarians and a special children’s section is available at her website. ‘Sir Princess Petra’ is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Tate Publishing.

Book 1 & 2 Synopsis

Synopsis book 1, Sir Princess Petra – The Pen Pieyu Adventures

At Longstride Castle, in the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu, it is Princess Petra’s ninth and royal birthday. Her father, King Longstride, has promised her anything her heart desires.Petra chooses to become a royal knight and protect her kingdom. (Thus far, Longstride castle has no knights as all of the silly soldiers are still trying to become knights.)

After much commotion in the royal throne room, King Longstride has no choice but to grant her request. The royal rule book says nothing about a girl becoming a knight but only that the proposed knight must perform a deed from a list of three. The choices are: to capture a crocodile and make his skin into a royal leather chair; to hush the howling, nasty dragon, Snarls, in the Forest of Doom or to eat a roomful of raw onions.

Petra chooses to hush the howling, nasty dragon, Snarls. Outfitted in the best royal pots and pans,Petra heads off into the Forest of Doom with nothing more than her cake knife sword and a sack of onions to search out the dragon.

After a few strange encounters in the Forest of Doom,Petra finally confronts Snarls; and after some onion-throwing and eyebrow-singeing, she discovers not all is as it seems. Snarls is howling because his tail is stuck under a pile of fallen rocks, not because he is mean and nasty.  Petra helps Snarls escape his predicament, and the two become fast friends.

Petra returns to the castle to announce her accomplishment of hushing the howling dragon and, thus, gains her real armour. Thereafter, she is forever known as Sir Princess Petra.

Of course,Petra and Snarls go on to have more adventures and encounter other zany characters: Bograt, the bog witch; Prince Nastybun and his midget army; and Letgo, the crocodile.

And Pen Pieyu Kingdom has never been the same.

Book Teaser, book 2, Sir Princess Petra’s Talent – The Pen Pieyu Adventure

Sir Princess Petra has already proven she is a kind and noble knight. This, however, does not please the king and queen—they want her to behave like a princess and forget this silly knight nonsense of hers!

But when the king writes a new rule in the royal rule book that requires her to attend Talent School and acquire a princess talent certificate or suffer the spell of the royal magician,Petra, reluctantly, agrees to go.  But who could have guessed what Sir Princess Petra’s Talent would be?

Book 2 forthcoming January, 2013.
