Easy Grammar Lesson Lay/Lie From The Dragon Grammar Book

The Dragon Grammar Book –  Grammar for Kids, Dragons, and the Whole Kingdom

Finally! An easy-to-understand grammar book with a sense of humor. From multi-award winning children’s fantasy author, Diane Mae Robinson, The Dragon Grammar Book, featuring the characters of The Pen Pieyu Adventures series, introduces beginners to the basic rules of the English language.  For middle grades to adults, The Dragon Grammar Book is an entertaining adventure into the mysterious Land of Grammar.  Releasing 2017

Excerpt from The Dragon Grammar Book copyright 2016 Diane Mae Robinson

Lay vs. lie

To use these confusing verbs properly, there are six verb tenses you need to remember in their order.

Lie, lay, lain

Lay, laid, laid

And lay has two different meanings.

Lie, lay, lain:

To use the verb lie, think of your bed or cave. Lie is something you do to yourself—you lie down.

I lie down beside the dragon.

Yesterday, I lay down beside the dragon.

I have lain down beside the dragon every day this month, and that’s why my eyebrows are scorched.

The dragon is lying in his cave now.

For two days, he lay in the creek.

He had lain in the mud for three days in a row before that.

Lay, laid, laid:

Lay is something someone does to something else. (This verb takes a direct object. Lie never does.) Think of lay and think of a place.

The dragon lay the book on the bookshelf.

The witch laid the book on the bookshelf yesterday.

The magician has laid the book on the bookshelf every day this month.

Lay the scrolls over there.

The councilman laid the scrolls where I told him to.

Yesterday, he had laid the scrolls too close to the dragon.

Excerpt

Subject/Object of a sentence

Subject is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something. To find the subject of a sentence, ask “who” or “what” the verb is talking about.                                                   The dragon studies grammar.

“The dragon” is the subject, grammar is the object, and studies is the verb.

Sometimes, a subject can be more than one word and even be an entire clause.                               The rules about onion fighting could fill pages in the royal rule book.

To find the subject in the above sentence, ask “what” could fill pages in the royal rule book. The subject is therefore “The rules about onion fighting.”

The subject of a verb is not part of a prepositional phrase (phrases that start with words such as at, in, on, among, along, within).                                                                                            Prince Mesoggie, along with his puny army, have hung their wet clothes on the drawbridge.

In this sentence, both Prince Mesoggie and his puny army have hung out their clothes, but because “along with his puny army” is a prepositional phrase, the subject is “Prince Mesoggie.”

Usually, but not always, the subject comes before the verb in a sentence.                                         Within the castle moat are several snapping crocodiles.

In this sentence, are is the linking verb following moat but moat is not the subject because “Within the castle moat” is a prepositional phrase. The subject crocodiles follows the verb.

Object is the person or thing that is affected by the action of the verb. There are three different kinds of objects.

Direct object is a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun that receives the action of the verb in a clause or sentence.                                                                                                               The dragon studies grammar.

Grammar is the noun and direct object that follows the verb studies and completes the sentence of what the subject “the dragon” is doing.

Indirect object is a noun or pronoun that indicates to whom or for whom the action of a verb in a sentence is performed. When a verb is followed by two objects, the indirect object usually comes right after the verb and always before the direct object.                      The dragon gave her a book.

Her is the indirect object. The pronoun her comes after the verb gave and before the noun and direct object book and completes the sentence of what the subject “the dragon” did.

Object of a preposition is a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun that follows a preposition and completes the meaning of the sentence.                                                                 The princess clobbered him with the book.

Book is the noun and the object of the preposition with and completes the sentence of what the subject “the princess” did.                                                                                                    The dragon now reads in a cave.

Cave is the noun and the object of the preposition in and completes the sentence of what the subject “the dragon” does now.

Chapter One: The Princess

                                    SIR PRINCESS PETRA (book one)

Illustration by Samantha Kickingbird for Sir Princess Petra - The Pen Pieyu Adventures, book 1.THE PRINCESS

Petra curtsied to the king and queen of Pen Pieyu, who sat upon their thrones. “Father tomorrow is the ninth day of the ninth year.”

“Yes, my dear princess, it is your royal birthday. And according to royal custom, you may have anything your heart desires, as promised,” declared King Longstride.

“I have thought hard and for many passing moons. Jewels, frocks of lace, and princess games have become boring. The thing I want the most . . .” Petra hesitated and bit on her lip. “I want to be a royal knight.”

“A knight!” The king stood up and seemed to turn pale. The queen swiped her hand over her forehead and moaned. The king’s councilman got so excited he ran around in circles until he bumped into a royal pillar.

“Why, never have I heard such a request,” the king said, pacing and scratching his grey beard.“You are a princess . . . a girl. You must be big and brave and mean and nasty to be a royal knight.”

“Where is it written that a girl cannot be a knight and protect her kingdom?” Petra demanded.

The councilman urgently flipped through the royal rulebook. “It does not say so, Your Majesty. There is no rule.”

The king grinned and gave a quick wink to the woozy-looking queen. “To become a knight of my kingdom, you must choose an act of bravery from the royal list of deeds,” the king proclaimed, turning the page of the royal rulebook. “The choices are: to capture a crocodile and make his skin into a royal leather chair; to hush that howling, nasty dragon, Snarls, in the Forest of Doom; or to eat a roomful of raw onions.”

Petra peeked into the royal onion room. All nine of the palace soldiers were crying and munching away. The princess wrinkled up her nose. “Yuck, I will never eat onions! And the only crocodile I know lives in the moat and is my friend. I have no choice. I will hush the howling dragon, Snarls, in the Forest of Doom,” she announced. Promptly the queen fainted, and the king plopped down on his ragged,7leather royal chair. “But I will take a sack of onions with me,” Petra added.

The royal chef grumbled while he outfitted the princess with a suit of his best royal pots and pans, because the regular armour turned out to be much too large. And her sword seemed to resemble one of the royal cake knives.

Petra clunked out of the palace. “Goodbye, and don’t worry. I will throw onions at the beast until he cries. Then I will stab him with my sword. See, I can be a nasty, big meany.”

A Great Adventure with a Wonderful Message

A Great Adventure with a Wonderful Message,June 10, 2015

This review is from: Sir Princess Petra’s Talent (Kindle Edition) 5 *’s

When it comes to fantasy novels directed at children, I am particularly impressed by authors who canachieve a memorable story that is palatable for young people, yet still shows an underlying skill of writing and awareness of deeper meanings. The possibility of using literature for such an admirable purpose is what writers should get into the business for, and Robinson has certainly done that. I think Sir Princess Petra is a wonderful newheroine for a new generation, a female who breaks down gender roles and demonstrates self-confidence and pride in her passions. We too often put children into specific boxes of gender, social class, and expectations, and that’s simply incorrect. This book seeks to remedy that. While some parts of the plot were a bit heavy-handed in the delivery of their moral message, not all young readers will be as perceptive as adults, so more blatant associations and lessons must be used. I don’t think it took away from the story, and despite being considerably older than the target audience of this book, I enjoy good writing and interesting characters as much as the next person, particularly when I find a book that would be suitable for the young people in my family and social circles. I’ll definitely be recommending this series to friends with children who would benefit from such a positive, fun, and unforgettable series.

Fantasy Kids Book – Excerpt.

While the Kid Lit Reviews http://kid-lit-reviews.com/2013/08/16/excerpt-sir-princess-petras-talent/ reviewer takes time off to recover from foot surgery, we are pleased to present a very special post from Diane Robinson’s soon to be released Sir Princess Petra’s Talent from her Pen Pieyu Adventure Series.  This is an excerpt from chapter one.

talent lighter version      The Royal Rule Book, Again

Excerpt from Chapter 1

.   .Petra awoke to the sound of the royal councilman’s bugle.  She hastily dressed in leggings and a tunic full of rips and holes from a recent jousting practice and scurried to the royal throne room.

.   ..   .The king and queen of Pen Pieyu sat on their ragged, leather thrones.  Her mother had a nervous look about her, and her father, a sly grin.  The royal councilman was running in circles until he came upon the royal rule book, which lay under Claymore, the royal mastiff.

13

.    .   .Somehow, Petra thought, the royal rule book looked much thicker than last she had seen it.  That could only mean trouble.  Petra rolled her eyes and gave a little moan.

.  . .   .“Father, Mother,” Petra said with a bow, “you summoned me?”

.   ..   .“Yes, my little Princess Knight,” her father replied, rather surly, as he watched the royal councilman point to a section in the royal rule book.  The king stood, cleared his throat, then bellowed out, “It is hereby written that all Princess Knights of the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu must attend Talent School before their tenth year of age.  They will be sent to the Land of Lost Donkeys and, under the instruction of King Asterman, learn a talent fit for a princess.  After which time, the hereby-said princess—meaning you—will return to the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu with a proper princess talent and a certificate.”

.   ..   .Petra felt her face flush and her manners fly out the window.  “That is ridiculous!  I am a royal knight since I have accomplished the deed of hushing the howling dragon, Snarls, in the Forest of Doom.  I should be treated as a royal knight and not this sissy princess stuff!  And, besides, you just wrote that part—”

.   ..   .“Silence!” the king roared.

.   ..   .The royal councilman’s eyes grew extremely wide.  He flipped the page of the royal book and backed away.

scan0002

.   ..   .The king gave his you-had-better-be-quiet glare toward Petra, then continued to read, loudly,   “The hereby-said Princess Knight will acquire a talent certificate or be in forfeit of this royal rule.  Forfeiting this royal rule will entitle the royal magician to turn the hereby-said Princess Knight into a frog to live in the bogs for a period of five years.”  The king smirked and plopped back onto his chair.

.   ..   .“You made that all up!”  Petra gave her best that’s-not-fair stare.  “Our kingdom has never had a Princess Knight, nor any knight for that matter, before me.  And as if a person can be turned into a frog.”  She wondered about this for just a moment.  “At any rate, I would rather be a frog than learn to crochet!”  Petra blurted and crossed her arms.
