The Dragon Grammar Book – LitPick Student Reviews and Book Trailer

LitPick Student Reviews made this funky book trailer for The Dragon Grammar Book. I’ve worked with LitPick Student Reviews a few times, and their services are great. I love that the books are actually reviewed by students. The students do a great job of writing an extensive review. Thank you, Jonny and Ampster.

Here’s the two reviews.

Review by Jonny, age 12, 5 stars.

The Dragon Grammar Book by Diane Mae Robinson is a clearly written, informative book of grammar for anyone ages 12 and up. It begins with an explanation of the author’s purpose for this project and a list of important definitions that should help readers understand the grammar and punctuation rules that are well-organized into ten chapters.

To keep the book from feeling too much like a formal grammar book, each chapter begins with happy, light-hearted drawings of the characters from The Pen Pieyu Adventures series written by the same author. When they are compared with each other, the characters in the pictures seem to tell a fun story of their own about how grammar and punctuation might seem frightening at first but can be studied and learned. With an easy to understand book like this one, anyone can forget about it being a boring subject, and they can get excited about finally understanding how grammar and punctuation rules work.

Opinion:

The Dragon Grammar Book is a handy book to have around!

In this book, the rules are explained very well, and they have simple, sometimes silly, sample sentences about a kingdom with dragons in it. Most of the sentences show readers how to set up grammar and punctuation correctly, but in a few of the sections, sentences are labeled with (Wrong). This helps readers see common mistakes that anyone can make. The “Test Your Knowledge” sections and two tests also give readers opportunities to check how much they learned from the book. Much of each test comes from the sample sentences, so readers can review explanations in the chapters again if they can’t quite remember how to set up the sentences. The book ends with a few character sketches and positive feedback from others about the author’s Pen Pieyu series, so if readers enjoyed the theme in this book, they might decide to read those books too.

Grammar is usually hard to understand, but Ms. Robinson has made a difficult subject easy and interesting to learn. She explains why correct sentences are set up exactly the way they are, how some of the sentences are written incorrectly, and what to do to fix the mistake. When I first started studying grammar, I didn’t like it because many of the rules were complicated and didn’t make sense to me. This book has cleared up most of my confusion and has helped me see the purpose of learning to follow grammar and punctuation rules properly. I think reading this book will even help me be a better writer because it has helped me understand more about the parts of speech and how they work together with punctuation. Now I can set up my own sentences correctly more often and make sure they express the exact meaning that I want.

Review by Ampster, age 14, 5 stars.

Petra and Snarls are back for more in the Pen Pieyu Adventures. This time, they are tackling something fun and incredibly challenging: grammar. Join them and the rest of human and dragon kind in a quest to discover the secrets of words: their usage, spelling, and which punctuation goes with them. Written in second person, this book instructs you of the dos and don’ts of grammar and the English language. With exciting examples to engage readers, you won’t want to miss out of this enjoyable, easy-to-understand, educational book.

Opinion:

The Dragon Grammar Book was an easy-to-read informative book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Though this book was about grammar, which is not my favorite subject in school, the author, Diane Mae Robinson, did keep me engaged most of the time. It’s meant to be a reference book on grammar, not a story to be read in one sitting.

After reading the Pen Pieyu series, I fell in love with Petra and Snarls. Their unique personalities were portrayed perfectly and just as I remembered them. That was enough to keep me smiling throughout this entire book. It was an enjoyable book that kept me entertained.

The facts in this book were spot on, and I learned a lot about grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules. As an educational book to look up some quick English facts, this is perfect. And I must say that after studying this book, I’m absolutely positive I’ll ace my next grammar test. Any elementary or middle schooler who reads this will, too.

What I Thought

Hayden and his family are planning a Halloween party at the farm where they live. There will be a bonfire, decoration lights in the bushes, lots of food (Grandma’s Chess Pie recipe included in the book), guests in costumes, and a secret Mom, Dad, and Uncle Kevin are working on in the barn. And the whole family is excited that the bats showed up to live in the bat box they put up–just in time for Halloween too.

Little Miss History Travels to Mount Vernon

little-miss-history-mount-vernonLittle Miss History Travels to Mount Vernon

by Barbara Ann Mojica (Author), Victor Ramon Mojica (Illustrator)

Paperback: 46 pages

Publisher: eugenus® STUDIOS (September 21, 2016)

About the book

Who was George Washington? Washington is best known as America’s first president, but he was also a military hero. If you asked George Washington what he really wanted to be, he would reply, “a farmer.” Seeking to revolutionize antiquated 18th century farming methods, Washington experimented with crop rotation, fertilizers, plowing and plants. The Mount Vernon Ladies Association began restoring his estate to its former glory in 1853. Today the buildings, grounds and The Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center reveal the real Father of the United States of America.

What I thought

Little Miss History Travels to Mount Vernon is the 7th book in this excellent series that visits historical landmarks in the United States. In Barbara Ann Mojica’s latest book, Little Miss History takes the reader on an intriguing journey to Mount Vernon to learn about the life of George Washington. The author presents interesting facts about the lifestyle at the time by visiting rooms in George Washington’s mansion, the gardens and grounds, and the slave quarters. Each page has a photograph that has the wonderful illustrations overlaid on it.

This book, as well as all the book in this series, are written and designed in such a way that readers will be hooked on history. Wonderful book and highly recommended.

About the author

barbara-ann-mojicaBarbara Ann Mojica is a historian and retired educator. She writes historical articles for the Columbia Insider under the banner “Passages.” Using the whimsical Little Miss History character, Barbara hopes to inspire children to learn about historical people and places. About The Book

Lobo and his sidekick raven find a trail camera in their neck of the woods, and it attracts the attention of forest friends. Images captured have never been sillier or more candid. Just as their wild dispositions are exposed, the photo shoot comes to an unexpected end and they’re all left wondering why. The reason may be obvious.

C.L. Murphy4

What I Thought

Selfies in the Wild is a TOTALLY FUN BOOK! Lobo, the wolf pup, and his buddies discover a trail camera, and when they realize that the trail cam captures pictures of them (without actually “capturing” them), they come up with some hilarious star-studded poses that are wonderfully illustrated.  There are some clever words too; in Lobo’s world the characters are glutton-free and have feet that are pawsitively stinky. As the characters in this book state: “Let’s make a good impression”, that is certainly what C.L. Murphy did by writing and illustrating this book.

C.L. Murphy’s book are always fantastic, and Selfies in the Wild is the latest book in the author’s string of well written and delightful illustrated books. The author has an incredible imaginative way with words and art that captures the hearts of children and adults alike. This book had me chuckling throughout.  Lobo and friends always make life an adventure–I love that about these books.

What I Thought: Kitty Claus is a wonderful poetic story. I love books that give me warm heart tingles, books that are written in a whimsical way where magic flows from page to page. Kitty Claus and his mice friends are charming and their tale is one everyone will love.

“Sir Princess Petra has already attained her knighthood in the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu and her non-princess-like talent certificate from Talent School, neither of which pleases her father and mother, the king and queen.

“The king writes up more silly rules in the royal rule book to deter Sir Princess Petra from her knightly ways and useless talent, and turn her into a real princess once and for all.

“Will the king finally succeed with this newly written, ridiculous mission for Petra?” [back cover]

Review
Sir Princess Petra and friends return for the third and final of four installments of The Pen Pieyu Adventures. King Longstride continues add new, oddly worded rules to the “Royal Rule Book” trying to strip Sir Princess Petra of her knighthood. The King is so determined to keep Petra a princess he willing sends Petra to the Land of the Boogy Gobees, alone. Wait, did he say alone? ALONE! No Snarls? No Sir Bograt? No one by Petra’s side?

Then King decreed, (should Petra actually fail her mission),

Book3-Nov.15 (1) (1)_page105_image10“Hence if the hereby-stated should fail this royal seal-of-approval mission, which is of the utmost importance to the well-being of the kingdom shareholders—meaning me and the queen—the hereby-said Princess Knight will henceforth be required to relinquishment of the hereby-noted knighthood to the full completeness so as to render it null and never was.”

Could this get worse? Yep, if Petra has only 2 days to complete the mission and, should she “fail, forfeit, or give up” Sir Bograt, the bog witch, will lose her knighthood as well. Petra’s solo mission is to capture a “car-panther”—vicious scoundrels with saw-blade teeth reinforced with iron tips—and bring it back to Pen Pieyu Kingdom. (What will King Longstride do with such a dangerous animal?) Petra calls the King’s bluff and sets off on her mission. She travels deep into the forest, through the swamps surrounding Kingdom Mesoggie, and finally arrives at the Land of the Boogy Gobees.

Book3-Nov.15 (1) (1)_page105_image18As Petra enters the Land of the Boogy Gobees, her steed suddenly disappears. (Did I forget to mention how Petra—once again—outsmarts her father? Well, she did. Snarls and Sir Bograt are by Petra’s side. Wait, you should know, Bograt was lost at Hobble-Wobble Creek, swept away on a rogue wave and disappearing down the creek). Now alone, as her father wished, Petra must complete the mission.

Book3-Nov.15 (1) (1)_page105_image12Sir Princess Petra’s Mission may be the best installment of The Pen Pieyu Adventures. Robinson increased the number of unexpected twists, making them stranger and funnier. As is the norm in Kingdom Pen Pieyu, you will meet several characters, each one delightfully stranger than the last. Snarls, the dragon, has always been my favorite character. (Snarls, my friend, after three stories, you are looking perfectly plump.)

I love the word play, common in this series, and the goofy King and Queen. Petra is a great role model and a non-stereotypical character for girls. She wants her parents to accept her, as she is—a princess and a knight. Petra is respectful and considerate, has great self-esteem, and understands the King’s Royal Rule Book better than the King. Though The Pen Pieyu Adventures is a terrific series for girls, boys will find much to love as well, including characters such as Snarls the dragon (Petra’s Steed).

Book3-Nov.15 (1) (1)_page105_image7Sir Princess Petra’s Mission will keep reluctant readers entertained with its short chapters, broken up with interesting grayscale illustrations. At 105 pages, this is a fast read, though reluctant readers could easily finish one or two chapters a sitting, if not more. Bermundo’s illustrations enhance the story and bring the characters to life. Sir Princess Petra’s Mission is his debut children’s book. Michael Bermundo is also a student at, and will soon graduate from, University of Cebu with a degree in animation.

cover group seriesIf you are looking for a chapter book with non-stereotypical characters, intelligent word play, and kid-friendly humor The Pen Pieyu Adventures is the series you want. Each book in this three FOUR-book set is a stand-alone read, but to get the most out of The Pen Pieyu Adventures, read these award-winning, highly acclaimed chapter books in order:  Sir Princess Petra. Sir Princess Petra’s Talent, and finally today’s book, Sir Princess Petra’s Mission. You and your children will love the characters and the stories from Kingdom Pen Pieyu.

Synopsis: Lobo returns in this adventure, sweeter and a bit salty this time. This lil’ wolf pup finds that there’s nothing like a little sea air to bring out the best in him and his unlikely tag-alongs. Take a trip to the Galapagos with Lobo and his right-hand raven, Roxy, as they help an injured, new feathered friend return home. Lobo faces some fears and witnesses the joy that comes from helping others in this “birds of a different feather DO flock together” tale.

What I Thought: I love Lobo, the wolf pup, and his sidekick, Roxy, the raven, in all their adventures. This story a fun adventure as Lobo and Roxy are up for the task of helping out a new-found friend in need, and along the way, finding more new friends. The story is well written with some humor added in for good measure. The illustrations are fantastic. C. L. Murphy has created an excellent series in The Adventures of Lovable Lobo. Highly recommended.

Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers…the place to be to feed your need to read no matter how big, small, or somewhere in between it may be.
Today, my fair readers, we are celebrating the BOOK BIRTHDAY of the third addition to The Pen Pieyu Adventures starring none other than, Sir Princess Petra.  Sound the trumpets!  Roll out the red carpet!  Herald her arrival with flash and boom!  This is a princess that challenges the entire whole of princess-hood with a smile on her face, a pink feather in her knightly helmet, and all while sitting astride her chosen “stead” named Snarls…who just so happens to be a dragon.  Have I got your attention yet?  I thought so.  Without further ado, here is today’s book of choice…

About the book
Sir Princess Petra has already attained her Knighthood in the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu and her non-princess-like Talent Certificate from Talent School, neither of which pleases her father, the king.
The king writes up more silly rules in the royal rule book to deter Sir Princess Petra from her knightly ways and useless talent and turn her into a real princess once and for all.
Will the king finally succeed with this newly written, ridiculous mission for Petra?

I remember my first adventure through the pages with Petra, oh excuse me…SIR Princess Petra. ^-^  It was magical, mystical, illustrated and wordy fun with every turn of the page AND phrase.  I actually started with book two as part of a blog tour and enjoyed it so much that I then sought out book one to enjoy on my own (which apparently I forgot to review once upon a time…oops!).  When I saw the review request in my INBOX for book three, I immediately responded with an enthusiastic YES as I knew it was not to be missed.  I mentally walked down memory lane and then looked back at ye olde blog to read through the first post only to realize, it was THREE years ago that the adventure had taken place.  Wow.  THREE years.  It seems like a lifetime considering the books we devour on a weekly/monthly/yearly basis, but the good ones stick with you, you know…and this was definitely one of the good ones.

Now, being that this is a series, one might wonder if you have to read the preceding books to be “in the know”.  In this case, totally unnecessary (but still recommended for the sheer enjoyment of it all!) because the author has taken care of you with a brief overview of both preceding adventures at the beginning of this installment.  Bookmarks up to the author for that nifty inclusion!  After removing the cobwebs from the past, I dove in feet first (as all good divers should) and discovered Sir Princess Petra and friends waiting for me within the pages as if I had never left, eagerly anticipating their next adventure.  Thanks to the King that wait will be short lived and if he has anything to say about it, so will Sir Princess Petra’s stint as a knight…a very un-princess-like pastime in his opinion.  With her mission in mind, she and her somewhat merry band of friends set forth seeking to capture the illusive car-panther…but what they find is beyond their wildest dreams.
It was great to see the familiar faces of Petra, Bograt, Snarls, and both of the royal Longstride’s again, though the latter is still confoundedly set in making Petra into the princess they want her to be instead of embracing her uniqueness to its full potential.  *grr*  I love how Petra is not afraid to be who she really is and calls her parents out on their shenanigans time and again.  That’s right King Longstride.  Just because you make a rule doesn’t mean it will stick if not grammatically sound.  He he he.  For any of you that have been visiting here for some time, you know that I love word play and am a stickler for word usage/sentence structure so the wordy fun encountered here is right up my alley making Petra an instant literary bestie.  Next up, Snarls!  Yes, that lovable dragon with a heart of gold is back and though he may not be able to spit fire on command but he’s working on it; in the mean time, he’s utilizing his other many talents.  Bograt is…well, Bograt.  Here and there, onion chomping and wave surfing, not much gets her down and the secrets she keeps are too many to number; good thing she’s on our side, right?

All in all, a wonderful adventure through the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu with a spunky group that I’d call friends any day of the week.  They each march to their own drummer, leaving an impression you won’t soon forget, but that’ part of their charm.  It reminds us that we can do anything we want to do, be anything we want to be…so long as we choose our words carefully.  ^-^  Recommended read for Children’s Fiction fans of all ages.
