5.0 out of 5 stars A PRINCESS WITH PIZAZZ!, January 5, 2014
As the story opens, we meet Princess Petra who is about to celebrate her birthday on the ninth day of the ninth month on the ninth year. According to royal custom, she may request anything she wishes as a birthday gift. Petra addresses her parents and informs them that she is tired of the usual gifts of jewelry and clothes. This year she wants to become a royal knight. Her father, King Longstride cannot find anything disallowing her request in the royal rulebook. However, she must choose and successfully accomplish one of three acts of royal bravery: capture a crocodile and make his skin into a royal leather chair, quiet the howling dragon named Snarls who lives in the Forest of Doom, or eat a roomful of raw onions! The princess dislikes onions and is friendly with the kingdom’s crocodile, so she quickly decides on quieting the dragon.Princess Petra departs the castle in a suit of armor made of pots and pans because all the royal armor is too big for her. Her weapon looks more like a cake knife than a sword. The poor princess soon meets adversity. During her adventures, she must figure out how to stop the dragon from howling and keeping the royal family awake, cope with a witch in the bog, and deal with an army of knights from a neighboring kingdom who want to challenge her. This princess has brains and common sense along with her beauty. She does not win her battles with force and bullying; Petra is a good judge of character and human nature! (even if some of those characters are not technically human) She has a wonderful sense of humor and can turn adversity into advantage.Petra provides an outstanding role model for young boys and girls for she has many lessons of courage, friendship and character to teach them. She and the other quirky characters in this book possess a delightful sense of humor. The black and white pencil drawings are soft and subtle complementing the quick moving text of this short chapter book which could be read in one sitting as a read aloud or in chapters for discussion in a classroom setting. Looking forward to reading more of The Pen Pieyu Adventures from this talented new author.

Award Winning Children’s Book Author Diane Mae Robinson Releases ‘Sir Princess Petra’s Talent’, Second In ‘Pen Pieyu Adventures Series’

Robinson received the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artists Award for Children’s Book Author and took 2nd Place in the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards for ‘Sir Princess Petra’, the first book in the series. The second book is receiving rave reviews as well

[October 1, 2013, St. Paul, Alberta, Canada] Award winning Canadian author Diane Robinson has announced the release of ‘Sir Princess Petra’s Talent’, the second book in ‘The Pen Pieyu Adventures’ series of children’s books. In the new book, Sir Princess Petra has already proven she is a kind and noble knight. This, however, does not please the king and queen–they want her to behave like a princess and forget all that silly knight nonsense of hers.“I wrote book two in this series,” Robinson stated, “for followers who fell in love with Sir Princess Petra in book one. Sir Princess Petra is a fun character to write about. She is a compassionate and brave heroine who believes that life is about accepting others for who they are, about being kind, and about accomplishing what she sets out to do.”Ms. Robinson also announced that ‘Sir Princess Petra’ took an Honorable Mention award in the 2013 Readers’ Favorite International Awards for Children Grade K – 3rd. This adds to the long list of awards for ‘Sir Princess Petra’.  Robinson was honored with two major awards for the first work. She was awarded the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artists Award for Children’s Book Author and took 2nd place in the Purple Dragonfly Book awards for Children’s Chapter Book.‘Sir Princess Petra’ features surprising plot twists and turns, brilliant flashes of humor, zany characters and is rooted in timeless values that shine through the charismatic main character. It is written in the tradition of C. S. Lewis and is reminiscent of ‘Shrek’. Reviewers have labeled the award winning book a ‘fantasy adventure that is sure to become a timeless classic.’’Sir Princess Petra’s Talent’ has already received a number of very favorable reviews. A recent review on Goodreads stated, ‘This is a book that should be in lots of classrooms. I think it is a good book to help children understand that everything is not as it first seems.’ Another reviewer stated, ‘Cloaked in a fantasy work of knights, kings, and dragons that will engulf children into the story, the moral lessons imparted are refreshingly neither preachy nor boring. Petra’s breath of fresh air personality makes her an exceptional role model for children to admire and to imitate in the real situations of fear, new people, challenges, and goals in their own lives.””Readers will enjoy book two,” Robinson continued, “because of the spunky character Petra is as she finds adventures everywhere, even while seeking out her talent. Her endearing sidekick, Snarls the dragon, is also back to ensure that the adventures are humorous as they come across some most unusual situations and zany characters.”

While dragon books are one of the most popular segments of fantasy fiction and children’s books in today’s marketplace, in these fantasy fiction books, Robinson uses the dragon books concept as the background to teaching young people traditional values. Ms. Robinson’s highly praised work demonstrates that dragon books can be something much more than dragon books.

Adventure Kids Books – Plotting

Adventure Kids Books: the plotting of an adventure story.

** The plot of an adventure kids books proceeds logically from beginning to end. Anything can happen in the story, especially in fantasy kids books, but it must make sense and not just be introduced into the story haphazardly. There must be a reason for everything that happens, regardless of how bizarre that reason may be.
** The main character needs a motive for what they want to achieve. Their motive may be honor, vengeance, or love. Whatever the motive, it must spur the main character to act.
** Adding conflict is vital to making the story interesting. Conflict can be whatever or whoever is giving the main character a hard time. In writing children’s books, the conflict can be a villain, a situation, or even a storm that forces the main character to fight to attain their goal.
**Dialogue that is exciting. Every single word of dialogue should move the story forward in some way. If it doesn’t, then it’s babbling. Moving the story forward with dialogue can:
–make the character’s intentions or motives become clear.
–explain the emotions of the character.
–describe something or someone of importance, and at the same time tell the reader how the character feels about it or what they intend to do about it.
**Characters that are credible and real to the reader (whether human, animal, or fantasy characters) will move the story forward naturally. Know your characters inside out and those characters will always say and do things that are credible. Characters that are credible makes the reader really care about and connect with those characters.
**Logical surprise is the groundwork for humorous situations. But the surprise must come from some credible mannerism of that character or unfold naturally from the scene. Humor makes a character endearing. Even in a bad situation, a character can do or say something funny, and that can make the scene that much more memorable.
**Write simply and well. Simple writing does not mean dull–it means writing with clarity and writing artfully, with grace. Simple writing is hard work, but the more times you edit your manuscript, the more simplicity and clarity will come forward.
**Edit, edit, edit. Re-word sentences to read more gracefully. Take out all those words/sentences that don’t do anything to move the plot/characterization forward. Make everything your characters do and say have meaning. This is the art of good plotting in adventure kids books.

Fantasy Kids Book – Excerpt.

While the Kid Lit Reviews http://kid-lit-reviews.com/2013/08/16/excerpt-sir-princess-petras-talent/ reviewer takes time off to recover from foot surgery, we are pleased to present a very special post from Diane Robinson’s soon to be released Sir Princess Petra’s Talent from her Pen Pieyu Adventure Series.  This is an excerpt from chapter one.

talent lighter version      The Royal Rule Book, Again

Excerpt from Chapter 1

.   .Petra awoke to the sound of the royal councilman’s bugle.  She hastily dressed in leggings and a tunic full of rips and holes from a recent jousting practice and scurried to the royal throne room.

.   ..   .The king and queen of Pen Pieyu sat on their ragged, leather thrones.  Her mother had a nervous look about her, and her father, a sly grin.  The royal councilman was running in circles until he came upon the royal rule book, which lay under Claymore, the royal mastiff.

13

.    .   .Somehow, Petra thought, the royal rule book looked much thicker than last she had seen it.  That could only mean trouble.  Petra rolled her eyes and gave a little moan.

.  . .   .“Father, Mother,” Petra said with a bow, “you summoned me?”

.   ..   .“Yes, my little Princess Knight,” her father replied, rather surly, as he watched the royal councilman point to a section in the royal rule book.  The king stood, cleared his throat, then bellowed out, “It is hereby written that all Princess Knights of the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu must attend Talent School before their tenth year of age.  They will be sent to the Land of Lost Donkeys and, under the instruction of King Asterman, learn a talent fit for a princess.  After which time, the hereby-said princess—meaning you—will return to the Kingdom of Pen Pieyu with a proper princess talent and a certificate.”

.   ..   .Petra felt her face flush and her manners fly out the window.  “That is ridiculous!  I am a royal knight since I have accomplished the deed of hushing the howling dragon, Snarls, in the Forest of Doom.  I should be treated as a royal knight and not this sissy princess stuff!  And, besides, you just wrote that part—”

.   ..   .“Silence!” the king roared.

.   ..   .The royal councilman’s eyes grew extremely wide.  He flipped the page of the royal book and backed away.

scan0002

.   ..   .The king gave his you-had-better-be-quiet glare toward Petra, then continued to read, loudly,   “The hereby-said Princess Knight will acquire a talent certificate or be in forfeit of this royal rule.  Forfeiting this royal rule will entitle the royal magician to turn the hereby-said Princess Knight into a frog to live in the bogs for a period of five years.”  The king smirked and plopped back onto his chair.

.   ..   .“You made that all up!”  Petra gave her best that’s-not-fair stare.  “Our kingdom has never had a Princess Knight, nor any knight for that matter, before me.  And as if a person can be turned into a frog.”  She wondered about this for just a moment.  “At any rate, I would rather be a frog than learn to crochet!”  Petra blurted and crossed her arms.

Fantasy Kids Book Review

The Book Corner 5 stars / 5 stars Review by Samantha Bates http://mrsbbooks2011.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/sir-princess-petra-diane-mae-robinson.html

Sir Princess Petra - The Pen Pieyu Adventures

Sir Princess Petra – The Pen Pieyu Adventures

From the back cover: ‘I have thought hard and for many passing moons. Jewels, frocks of lace, and princess games have become boring. The thing I want the most…’ Petra hesitated and bit on her lip. ‘I want to be a royal knight.’ Princess Petra’s unusual birthday request sends the court into a frenzy, but when she agrees to undertake a knight’s quest they can’t stop her. Armed with a cake knife and outfitted in the best royal pots and pans, Petra sets off to face a dragon and win her real armor before encountering a bog witch, and an army of the kingdom’s worst enemies. Will Petra’s kindness and acceptance prove to be more valuable than weapons and armor?’

This was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. This is quite a short story with chapters, and is perfect for young independent readers. This will appeal to a range of children young to older. This is a story about Princess Petra and it is her birthday, her father, the King has told her she can have anything she likes. Princess Petra tells the King she wants to become a Royal Knight. After some resistance (as girls aren’t Knights!) the King tells the Princess that in order to become a Knight she has to choose a challenge to complete. The Princess decided that she will hush the howling dragon as she doesn’t fancy any other the other challenges and takes a bag of onions with her. This is a story of journey and forming unlikely friendships with others. The Princess sees the dragon and witch as genuine people and not as others look upon them. She helps them and forms friendships with them. This also is a story of achievement and belief in yourself. Just because Petra is a girl this does not stop her from doing what is seen as a boy’s job. This is a powerful message to children and encourages them to follow what they believe in. The illustrations are nice, however I feel it would have been nice for these to be in colour for children who’s imagination is not as vivid as others. There are many words in the story that stimulate discussion for younger readers, which helps them to develop their vocabulary. I would like to thank the author for sending me this and look forward to reading her next.

Dragon Books For Children – Review

Sir Princess Petra

Dragon books for children by Diane Mae Robinson (Tate Publishing, Mustang, Oklahoma, 2011, 64 pages)

Book Review by Dennis Moore

Diane Robinson, who lives in a small hilltop castle near St. Paul, Alberta, in Canada, has written a whimsical children’s tale of a forest inhabited by gnomes, fairies, a princess, and a dragon; Sir Princess Petra. It is a tale that is sure to delight both adults and children alike. With the approach of her 9th birthday, Princess Petra wanted something that according to royal custom was for her to have anything that her heart desired. As jewels, frocks of lace, and princess games had become boring to her, she told her father, the King of Pieyu, King Longstride, that she wanted to be a royal Knight. Of course, this was uncommon for a girl to become a royal knight, but according to royal custom she was to have anything her heart desired. The King tried to dissuade his daughter by stating: “To become a Knight of my kingdom you must choose an act of bravery from the royal list of deeds,” proclaimed the king. “The choices are: to capture a crocodile and make his skin into a royal leather chair; to hush that howling, nasty dragon, Snarls, in the Forest of Doom; or to eat a roomful of raw onions.”
Princess Petra’s unusual birthday request sends the royal court into a frenzy, but when she agrees to undertake a knight’s quest they can’t stop her. Armed with a cake knife and outfitted in the best royal pots and pans, Petra sets off to face a dragon and win her real armor before encountering a bog witch, and, and an army of the kingdom’s worst enemies. She befriends them all and returns to her father’s kingdom triumphantly, along with these characters, and ready to be bestowed with all the trappings of being a royal knight.
This warm and enchanting tale of a child’s innocence and determination is worthy of a story to be told by parents and grandparents to their children, and it is a book that I highly recommend. This is a tale spun by Robinson full of quirky characters and surprising plots that will delight both adults and children alike, and keep listeners being told the story in rapt attention.

Fantasy Kids Books – Character Building

Fantasy kids books writing. One of the first things I do when creating characters in my fantasy kids books is to give them names, (once I know what they are; a nine-year-old princess, a dragon, etc) then an image of them starts to form gradually in my mind. After the image of each character forms, their personalities start to come alive. Once their personalities become clear, the plotting of a fantasy kids book is ready to be written.

This is my process for creating fantasy kids books and dragon books for children. The whole process takes months and as new details come to me, I jot them down on paper. Each character has their own section in my character log book. When I feel that the characters are whole and real, I start imagining what their adventures will be. I start to make a mini movie in my head as I visualize the ‘where and what’ of the plotting. The plotting is still work, but plotting seems to come so natural once the characters are fully formed.
When you’re writing fantasy kids books, adventure kids books, or any other genre of children’s book, you don’t have a lot of space to ‘tell’ about the character’s descriptions, nor do you want to. So a lot of the characteristics will come out as other characters meet them or through what that character is doing and saying. The really cool thing about getting your characters to be real and whole (even if a lot of that information isn’t told to the reader), is that it does come out in the story. It comes out in the “Show Don’t Tell” that all writers have heard a thousand times. I think it becomes a sub-conscious process to the writer because the writer knows her characters just as much as knowing a long-time friend. And if your characters are real to you, the writer, it is amazing how the illustrator will have the same vision as you had for those characters.
When book one, Sir Princess Petra, was in the illustration stage, I nervously waited and wondered what the artist’s vision of the main character, Petra Longstride, would be. I worried for all my characters. After all, I felt my reputation and all my hard work as the writer was at stake.

The thing about the whole creative process is this: if you, the writers, have made believable and whole characters, the illustrator gets it just as easily as if you had sent her photographs.

When I received the illustrations for book one, Sir Princess Petra – The Pen Pieyu Advenutres, they were perfect. All the characters were exactly as I had envisioned them. I had learned about this process in writing school, but until I had been through this process, I wasn’t sure that it actually worked. It does work. And when it did work, I knew I had done my job as the writer to create fully rounded, believable characters in my first book in this series of fantasy kids books.

Sir Princess Petra, the main character of the series, The Pen Pieyu Adventures.

Sir Princess Petra, the main character of the series, The Pen Pieyu Adventures.

This is exactly what Petra Longstride looked like to me, in my imagination, before the illustrations had even begun. The illustrator of the book is, Samantha Kickingbird and she was assigned by the publisher to my book.

To make your characters real to the reader is the best things you can when writing fantasy kids books.
