Review by Barbara Ann Mojica for Sir Princess Petra’s Talent

A PRINCESS FOR ALL

Sir Princess Petra’s TALENT: Book Two The Pen Pieyu Adventure, 5 *’s

Written by Diane Mae Robinson

Petra'stalent,pic

This is the second book in The Pen Pieyu adventure series. The author provides a synopsis of Book One to get all readers up to speed though the book can stand on its own. Sir Princess Petra is no ordinary princess; she is spirited, stubborn, sensitive, and devoted to her friends and subjects. In the last book, the reader met a nine year old girl who was determined to become the first knight in her magical kingdom. Petra achieved knighthood by slaying the howling dragon named Snarls in a series of adventures; he later becomes her friend and master connoisseur in the palace kitchen.

At the beginning of Book Two, the king and queen summon Petra informing her that she must go away to the Land of Lost Donkeys to attend training in a Talent School in order to become a “proper princess.” This does not sit well with Petra, but she is an obedient daughter and loyal subject and so she acquiesces to her parents’ request. On her journey she meets Prince Duce Crablips who is secretly betrothed to her, but who would really like to go to school to learn how to crochet. The selection of talents available to Petra at the school are all unappealing, sewing, etiquette and knitting are not her cup of tea. Together with Snarls and Prince Duce, they eventually find a satisfactory course and complete certificates before being forced to make a quick exit. The three compatriots become embroiled in an adventure with the ganutes on their way home to the kingdom. Petra assists all her friends in employing their new found talents; Pen Pieyu attains subjects with new talents in the process. Petra enthralls her parents and her subjects with her new abilities, which I suspect might be the start of a new adventure.

This series is the perfect chapter book for new or reluctant readers. Because I write picture books, I have a definite preference for illustration in children’s books; the black and white pencil drawings in this book are a definite enhancement to the plot. The short length of the chapters are perfect for serial read alouds in the classroom or multiple bedtime stories. Petra is a strong role model for encouraging a young girl’s potential. Her strength of character along with the other rich and humorous characters extend the book’s appeal to boys as well. There is humor, adventure, magic, fantasy and just enough silliness to appeal to children and parents of children from early elementary through middle grades. I anticipate a lot more exciting adventures and lessons in store for Petra’s fans as she matures. Another good chapter book by award-winning author, Diane Mae Robinson. “Sir Princess Petra’s Talent” is the second book in the Pen Pieyu Adventures, a fantasy chapter book series for middle grade readers age 9-10 and up. Appealing to both juvenile and older audiences, “Sir Princess Petra’s Talent” continues a theme of discovering one’s true gifts and identity unclouded by hampering gender or other stereotypes’ influences. Sir Princess Petra has already demonstrated her worthiness to be a knight by quieting and befriending the dragon Snarls. However now she must attend Talent School and earn a princess talent certificate to please her parents, who wish she would forget being a knight and behave like a normal princess. Thus begins the voyage of discovery in this second volume of a very funny, creative series. Humor is the secret weapon, unexpected and delightful, that succeeds in enthralling young readers or dragons alike. Brief, action-packed chapters and charming black and white illustrations tell this incredible story of a princess whose secret talent is (surprise!) Storytelling? Who would suspect such an incredible, wildly unlikely thing? Sorry for the spoiler, but readers will find the framing of the story just as surprising as its ending, as all pages vibrate with a freshness of vision that is also hauntingly familiar and believable. “Sir Princess Petra’s Talent” will lead all kinds of readers through tangles of wildwood and torrents of intrigue to arrive at an unexpected place in the heart.

Book one and two of this fantasy kids books series available in paperback and e-book on all major book seller sites. Autographed hard covers available from the author at: robinsond@mcsnet.ca For more information about Diane’s dragon books for children: www.dragonbooks.com

high res. book 2 coverTitle: Sir Princess Petra’s Talent

Author: Diane Mae Robinson

Genre:  Children’s Fantasy

Publisher: Tate Publishing & Enterprises, LLC

Publication Date:  September 24, 2013

Description

Sir Princess Petra has already proven she is a kind and noble knight. This, however, does not please the king and queen—they want her to behave like a princess and forget this silly knight nonsense of hers!

But when the king writes a new rule in the royal rule book that requires her to attend Talent School and acquire a princess talent certificate or suffer the spell of the royal magician, Petra, reluctantly, agrees to go. But who could have guessed what Sir Princess Petra’s Talent would be?

Review:

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

This was the first time I’d read about Princess Petra but the beginning of the book has a prologue that gave background information and explained how Princess Petra became a knight; so, although I hadn’t read the first book, I had no problem getting caught up.

What an adventure! This would be a fun book to read aloud to children. The descriptions of all of the characters are colorful and would be good for helping children to use their imaginations. I especially liked the cute names of the characters and kingdoms.

There are also some age appropriate lessons in this book. Princess Petra is her own person. She does what she believes to be the right thing and doesn’t worry about what others think. She doesn’t want to be a princess, she wants to be a knight. When she goes to Talent School, she doesn’t pick a course that would be expected of a princess, she picks one that interests her even though she’s discouraged from doing so. On the other hand, her friend, who is a prince, decides he wants to learn to knit.

Sir Princess Petra’s Talent is a great book! It is available at Tate Publishing,Barnes & Noble, or Amazon.

Dragon Books for Children Dragon Fan Mail

Dragon books for children can be a fun way for children to get interested in reading. I know it worked for me when I was a kid.

The dragon, especially if he’s a ‘nice’ dragon, can be a great character for children to relate to. Children love animals and fictitious creatures that talk and act as humans.

I have been fascinated with dragon books since I was a child. And I never believed all those things said about the ‘mean’ dragons in some dragon books for children. I always believed that dragons should be treated as any other pet; with love, kindness, and compassion.

So, because of my life long love of dragons, that is how I became a writer of fantasy children books. And now that I am the writer, I am finding that my dragon, Snarls, is getting more fan mail than I am.

Who is Snarls, you ask? Well, he is a secondary character in my adventure kids books series that wants to hog all the limelight. Below is a post of one of his ‘fan’ mails. I will be posting more of his mail later because it’s just too funny.

Dear Author Person,

I am miffed. I never thought you would post my last letter for all the world to see. How is this going to make Snarls feel? Okay, he will feel great. Attention is attention to him. But what about me? I don’t need the entire world knowing I have a dragon friend? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Okay, maybe you don’t, but it does.

Who is that with Snarls in the picture? Some hooligan character of yours? It is bad enough he hangs with Petra (a princess), and now some character named Babblin wants to talk his ear off, and mine too. Why did you send her with Snarls to my house? Do you really think I need a talker on top of a fire breathing snoring dragon?

I like Snarls, I really do, even the fire he puts everywhere is kind of endearing. Oh,and thanks for the tip about giving Snarls water before bedtime—to cut down on the fires.

Snarls is most welcome, as long as he stops scaring the kitties. As soon as one of them climbs up his tail, by his invitation, Snarls flips his tail and sends the cat flying through the air. Sure they always land on their feet but I always nearly have a heart attack. I got an email from him saying he was quite busy with book two, something about getting the editors to see things his way “or else.”

I have never been visited by story book character before yours. I am kind of getting used to it.

And yes, when Snarls visits me he always brings pajamas and snacks.

P.S. Fire department bill for all the previous havoc Snarls created at my house is in the mail.

Miss Anonymous.
****************************
Dear Miss Anonymous,
What can I say. My dragon has a mind of his own and he does play a little rough. We’re working on that. But he’s not your typical dragon in dragon books for children, is he now? I can’t believe he complained about his role in book 2. He seemed fine with it all through the writing and editing, and I presumed he liked being a character in fantasy kids books. Well, there is a little part about him wearing a pink, tasselled saddle that he complained about, but I thought he was over that.
Sorry for all the havoc he creates. Snarls really likes visiting you and, all the sleep-overs.
The Author.

Sir Princess Petra The Pen Pieyu Adventures by Diane Mae Robinson

5 stars / 5 stars Princess Petra’s birthday request sends the court into a frenzy, but when she agrees to undertake a knight’s quest they can’t stop her. Armed with a cake knife and outfitted in the best royal pots and pans, Petra sets off to face a dragon and win her real armor before encountering a bog witch, and an army of the kingdom’s worst enemies. Will Petra’s kindness and acceptance prove to be more valuable than weapons and armor?

Petra is the Princess of Pen Pieyu. It is September ninth, Petra’s ninth birthday, more appropriately called her “royal birthday.” Her father, the King, tells Petra she can have “anything your heart desires.” So what does a little Princess choose? Diamonds? Jewels? Barbie’s Palace? A Royal Playground? Nope, Petra decides she wants to become a knight. The King tells her she cannot because not only is she a Princess, she is a . . . girl.

“Where is it written that a girl cannot be a knight?” Petra asks. They check the Royal Rulebook and no, nothing about a girl not being a knight. Ah, but to be a knight, Petra must prove she is brave by performing an act of bravery. She chooses to quiet the howling dragon. Petra suits up in her temporary, makeshift armor and heads out to the Forest of Doom to hush Snarls.

Sir Princess Petra is one of those stories that will appeal to most everyone. It is charmingly funny. Petra sets out to prove she has what it takes to be a royal knight and proves she can do nearly anything. Snarles, the howling dragon, is endearing and lovable. If stuffed, sitting on a toy store shelf, every kid would want him. The story is short enough to be read in one sitting, say at bedtime. There are many opportunities for humorous, wacky, high-pitched voices, making Sir Princess Petra fun to read aloud. The author’s imagination is appropriately childlike. Petra is a child every parent will love. I know a child would have sweet, funny dreams after hearing mom or dad read this at bedtime.

Girls and boys will love this story. Girls will be able to relate to Petra, the girl who wants to break conventional female boundaries and enter into a male dominated career. Petra can encourage girls to become anything they choose, even when conventional wisdom, or a Royal Rulebook disagrees. Boys will love Snarls, the howling dragon and all the other Forest of Doom characters.

The illustrations are pencils drawings with wonderful shading and highlights. Petra is a strong character, yet the artist renders her sweetly, catching the child’s emotions perfectly. Snarls, the nasty, horrifying, dangerous dragon Petra sets out to conquer, looks the part until Petra sways him with her charms, and then helps him escape a predicament no one could expect. It is just one plot twist, which will entertain and amuse the reader. I hope Ms. Robinson continues her Pen Pieyu adventures.
